Cook Islands > Sister Islands > Atiu
Atiu is the third largest islands among Cook Islands.
Atiu has a rich, fertile interior framed for succulent pineapple
and a robust local coffee.
Captain Cook charted the Atiu islands during his voyage in 1777.
The five main villages of Areora, Tengatangi, Mapumai, Ngatiarua and Teenui
are grouped to gether on the high inland plateau after missionaries insisted
the populace move from costal settlements many years ago.
Although the reefs cling to the Island's coast,
offering only limited swimming.
Atiu has excellent white sand beaches and picturesque coves to explore.
For those who appreciate needlework, an enterprising art studio features
find hand crafted crochet and tivaevae.
